Winter Container Ideas

Old Man Winter should not keep us from having beautiful porch and patio pots. There are actually many ways to keep your outdoor pots looking fabulous throughout the holiday and winter seasons.

WINTER ARRANGEMENTS

For those looking for instant gratification, try our most popular winter container option, a Winter Arrangement. These arrangements are created by our designers from the freshest greens, stems, berries, and pine cones and are assembled to simply be dropped down into your decorative containers for an instant display. To transition them from Thanksgiving through the holiday and winter seasons, swap out a few of the accent pieces, like berries and stems. They can last you all winter, especially when protected from full sun.

Our designers create a diverse selection of “ready to go” arrangements each day throughout the holiday season (mid-November – mid-December). They can also make custom arrangements to fit your personal style. These can be ordered in person or online at plantkingdom.net/shop.

Looking for something a little more hands-on?

You can create your own winter arrangement from your garden or the fresh greenery selection we stock during the holiday season. First, you will need to make a base using stems of greenery. Then decorate with young tree or shrub stems, berries, and pine cones. When DIYing your arrangement at home it is easiest to keep the soil that is already in your containers and stick your stems directly into the soil. The soil will need to be soft enough to insert the stems but firm enough to hold them in place on a windy day. We have a wide variety of cut greenery, as well as stems and berries, during the holiday season for your DIY needs, so stop by or browse our selection on our online store.

LIVING EVERGREENS

For those looking for something living, try planting a beautiful evergreen in your pot. The trick to this option is finding the right size plant to fit in your pot that also looks proportional. We carry a wide variety of evergreens year-round in all shapes and sizes just for this purpose. They need minimal watering over the winter and the following spring you can keep it in the pot or simply remove it and either plant it in your landscape or grow it nearby until fall then repeat the process all over again. If you are planning on removing it in the spring, make it even easier on yourself by keeping the plant in the nursery pot and filling in any extra space around the nursery pot with potting soil to hold it in place.

You can use the evergreen simply by itself or add colorful pansies and cabbages, stems of greenery, or evergreen perennials, like autumn fern, heuchera, or hellebores, around the base.

*When using living plants in decorative containers over the winter you do run the risk of the air temperature dropping so low that it could damage or kill them but we find that the wintertime reward is worth the risk.

CUT TREE

For those looking for a more economical option, using a small cut tree is one of the best choices. You will get the look and size of a living evergreen without the cost. Simply select a cut tree, place it in a tree stand to keep it upright, and drop it down in your pot. You can also add greenery around the base and put lights on it to really brighten your display. During the holiday season, we have small cut trees and stands available and our tree wranglers will even put it in the stand for you.

During the holiday season (mid-November – mid-December), and sometimes even later into the winter, we will have a nice selection of all of these items to help welcome friends, family, and guests to your home during the winter. Stop by in person to see our current selection and if you have any additional questions please stop in or reach out through our email.
